Transfer Switch
An electronic control center that manages the transition from utility service to your Home Generator System when the power goes out. They also include patented power management technologies that manage the power demands of up to two 5-ton central air conditioners while protecting against power overload.
How to select the ideal automatic transfer switch:
- Service Amps: Automatic transfer switches come in three common sizes: 50 amps, 100 amps and 200 amps. To determine your needs, first take a look at the main breaker on your distribution panel. If you have a 200 amp main breaker (common in new homes), you will need a 200 amp WHOLE HOUSE automatic transfer switch. If you have a 100 amp main breaker (common in older homes), you will need a 100 amp WHOLE HOUSE automatic transfer switch. A 50 amp 12 circuit switch will work with either a 100 or 200 amp service and is the best solution whe you have selected a smaller generator (7-10kW).
- Installation: Once you have selected a switch, there are basically two ways to install an automatic transfer switch:
- Standard Installation: The most common option is to install it inside the home next to the main distribution panel. Your electrician will also need to install a sub-panel to manage the load properly.
- Service Disconnect: Briggs & Stratton offers automatic transfer switches with "service entrance disconnect". These outdoor transfer switches are connected directly to your home's utility meter instead of the main circuit panel. The service disconnect option eliminates the need for the sub-panel.
- Performance Upgrades (100, 200 amp switches): Finally, consider optimizing your Home Generator Systems performance with patented computer controls for maximum comfort and efficiency.

This generator transfer switch kit includes everything you'll need to install a generator transfer switch for safe, convenient portable generator hookup. This kit includes a prewired 8-circuit transfer switch, 25 foot rubber power cord and an aluminum, rain tight power inlet box enclosure. Power up essential circuits using a 7500 watt generator (continuous watts) during a power outage or emergency. It accommodates 8 to 10 household circuits like your furnace blower (gas only), refrigerator and kitchen circuits, well pump, lights, and television. The enclosure can be surface mounted indoors, and allows hardwired or plug-in generator connections. Because it was designed with off-the-shelf circuit breakers you don't have to search high and low for replacements, and your installer can reconfigure the breaker combinations to suit your family's needs!
This transfer switch has a L14-30 male power inlet and dual wattmeters to help you balance generator loads to prolong generator life. Includes two 15-amp 1-pole breakers, two 20-amp 1-pole breakers, one 2-pole 20 amp breaker, and one 2-pole 30-amp breaker. If your load center is in the garage, you'll just need the transfer switch and cord. But if your load center is in your basement, you'll need to install the power inlet box to connect your generator outside.
